Autonomous driving requires an enormous set of tools and technologies to be realised. A lot has been done, but there is still a long way to go. The availability of update HD maps is without doubt one of the key enablers here. At .objective we have developed a technology for 3D reconstruction with stereo camera based on the Large Scale Direct (LSD) SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping), in cooperation with Computer Vision Group at Technical University Munich. SLAM algorithms are tailored to the available resources, so they are not aimed at perfection but at operational compliance. Published approaches are employed in self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous underwater vehicles, planetary rovers, newly emerging domestic robots and even inside the human body.
